What is Forrest Bathing and the Benefits?

Forest Bathing is the Japanese practice to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of the forest and the great beauty of nature. Promoting relaxation, health, and psychological benefits. Walking through the forests is not new, but the concept of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) is. Involving slow, mindful walks through the forestry. It is not a hike; it is a sensory-focused therapy. Which can lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels, and boost the immune system.

Forrest Bathing has been around since 1982, and is based on traditional concepts:

  1. Being aware of the beauty of the World around you, inspiring nature therapy.
  2. Releasing deep emotions and feelings that words cannot describe.
  3. Sunlight leaking through trees, describes the human relationship and effects between sun, trees, and the leaves.
  4. Celebrating the beauty of imperfection and impermanence.
  5. Enjoy the benefits anywhere there are trees, and even in parks.
  6. Leave devices behind or turn off phones and electronic devices.

Time spent in the Great Outdoors can boost more than mental health; it can be good for the body too. Forest bathing can have an impact on the oxygen level in the brain. With a mindful focus to connect with the environment, while breathing in the fresh air, listening to birds, and touching tree bark. Enjoying time Soaking in nature can be a fun and healthy benefit on all levels.

“The intent of forest bathing is for people to be in touch with present-moment experience in a deep way.” Explained clinical psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD. “The sights, sounds and smells of the forest take us right into that moment, so our brains stop expecting, recalling, and worrying.

Mindfulness Is the practice of being in the present moment with intention, without judging. Immersing oneself in nature can improve both mental and physical health. Slow, mindful, and non-exercise activity, can provide stress management. Sensing things rather than judging or analyzing.
